In hundreds of years of politics, the vast majority of decisions affecting everyone have been made by only half the population.
Women have been criminally underrepresented in all forms of politics, government and power. It was only in the last century that they were allowed to vote.
First Among Equals is the story of those fighting for equality in democracy.
We hear from current and former Prime Ministers, Cabinet members, campaigning MPs and politicians of all levels spanning back over the past half century.
100 YEARS
Part One covers the story of Britain's first female MP, who took her seat exactly 100 years ago. The abuse she received was beyond words, being once described as "that blasted whore of a showgirl".
Part Two picks up the story a century later, where some things haven't changed. Female MPs today are subjected to threats of murder, rape and violence.
Jo Cox was murdered in her constituency office, Sarah Wollaston had a coffin delivered to her house, Luciana Berger was threatened with gang rape.
Female politicians around the world face a daily struggle to be heard.
This is their story.

First Among Equals was produced by MGV Productions with Alexis Bowater. Starting off as a campaign film to build a statue to mark 100 years since Nancy Astor became the first female MP, the project so grew into a much larger full documentary on the life of Astor and her influeance as the first female MP.
In this documentary MGV Productions interviewed leading female historians, current and former members of parliament, ex Prime Minister Theresa May as well as family members and locals who knew and worked with her in Plymouth. Hours of incredible stories and memories of Lady Astor was captured across the country with the documentary making is premiere at the launch of the Astor statue in Plymouth.
The documentary was lead by a female production team, envisioned and championed by Executive Producer Alexis Bowater, directed by Lucy Smith and edited by Sam Hatton-Brown.
